A man suspected of firing a shotgun in a Garden Grove neighborhood, which prompted a modified lockdown of several schools in the area, was taken into custody Thursday, according to police.

Nearby Alamitos Intermediate School and four elementary schools were placed on lockdown as investigators searched for a shooter.

All of the police activity was taking place away from the intermediate school and the campus was on a modified lockdown due to an abundance of caution, said Public Information Officer Alan Trudell with the Garden Grove Unified School District.

Under a modified lockdown students are allowed to walk from class to class, but can’t congregate outside, Trudell said.

Arriving officers confirmed a shotgun had been fired in front of a home and learned the suspected shooter was 27-year-old Carlos Villanueva.

A perimeter was set up around a nearby home Villanueva was believed to be living in.

Several people came out of the home, but they were uncooperative, the Police Department stated.

Eventually, Villanueva was caught trying to escape the perimeter and was arrested.

Villanueva was booked on suspicion of discharging a firearm in a negligent manner, assault with a deadly weapon/firearm and criminal threats.

Investigators had not yet located the shotgun used in the incident, the Police Department stated.

No one was shot or injured in the incident, which was possibly gang related, the Police Department stated.

Nearby Lawrence Elementary School, Stanford Elementary School, Skylark Elementary School and Zeyen Elementary School, were also on lockdown due to the incident, according to Natalie Grace with the School District.

The lockdown was lifted around 10:15 a.m., the School District tweeted.
