An American flag that had been removed from a Fresno County family’s home has been replaced after an apartment spokesman said the situation was the result of an “unfortunate misunderstanding,” CNN reported Wednesday.

The national symbol was removed from the home at Lexington Square Apartments in Clovis due to a complaint from an unspecified person, according to a letter signed by the complex and provided by the renters to local TV station KMPH.

The complaint was troubling to resident Deine Semar, who said the flag reminded her of her husband — a Wold War II veteran who was in the military for four years.

“I love our flag. I enjoy watching it flying. It’s one of the few pleasures I have left in life,” Semar told KMPH.

Semar’s son Joel said he was in disbelief and angry over its removal, and was told he had to make his complaint with the apartment complex’s corporate office in Boston.

“They won’t let you talk to anybody. You have to put your complaint on a voicemail complaint line and I’ve called them four times, left the same message and I have not heard from them,” Joel Semar said.

But after Semar left multiple voicemails and KMPH began to report the story, the complex’s manager replaced the Semar family’s flag, according to Deine.

“Praise God, I thank God for people like you,” she told KMPH reporter Erik Rosales. “We are ever so grateful, ever so grateful.”

The apartment complex provided the TV station with the following statement:

Our staff personally put the flag back up this afternoon. This incident was the result of an unfortunate misunderstanding. We apologize.
