A father was killed and his 4-year-old son was injured after a car struck the pair while they were out trick-or-treating in Irvine on Halloween night, police said.

John Roger Alcorn and the child were crossing the street at West Yale Loop and Burwood Street around 7:15 p.m. Friday when a Mazda 3 being driven by a woman collided into them, according to a news release from the Irvine Police Department.

Both victims had sustained significant injuries and were rushed to a local hospital, the release stated.

The 65-year-old father later died as a result of his injuries, police said.

His son was last reported to be in critical but stable condition.

The collision occurred roughly 30 minutes after a hit-and-run driver killed three 13-year-old girls while they were trick-or-treating in Santa Ana. The driver and his passenger fled, ditching their SUV at a nearby strip mall. They remained at large as of Saturday morning.

In the Irvine incident, the unidentified female driver remained at the scene and was released after cooperating with investigators, police said in the release.

The investigation was ongoing, and no further information was available.

Witnesses have been asked to call Irvine police Investigator Jonathan Cherney at 949-724-7024.
