A fatality investigation on the 57 Freeway prompted a temporary closure of the southbound lanes through the Brea area Monday morning.

The incident was reported shortly after 5 a.m. on the southbound 57 Freeway near Imperial Highway, according to the California Highway Patrol’s traffic incident log.

The Orange County coroner was called to the scene after the body of a pedestrian was discovered, the CHP log stated.

Investigators later determined the victim had been walking in lanes before being struck by a vehicle, which continued traveling southbound without stopping, a CHP news release stated.

The unidentified victim was then struck by several other vehicles, which also did not stop.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and a SigAlert was issued for the closure of all southbound lanes.

Traffic was diverted off the freeway at Lambert Road during the closure.

Aerial video from Sky 5 showed several miles of traffic backed up all the way to the Diamond Bar area.

The freeway was completely reopened by 9 a.m., according to the CHP.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Officer B. Garrison at 714-567-6000.
