Firefighters have stopped forward progress of a wind-driven blaze that threatened structures as it burned 150 acres in the Hesperia area on Wednesday afternoon.
The Farm Fire erupted around 1:30 p.m. in the area of Caliente and Ranchero roads, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department.
Fanned in part by winds of more than 30 mph, the flames spread at a “critical rate” and grew to at least 100 acres within an hour, fire officials said. The estimated acreage was later increased to 150.
The fire was burning near the 15 Freeway, though no lanes were closed or impacted, video from Sky5 showed.
By 2:50 p.m., it appeared that firefighters were gaining control over the vegetation fire, which continued to send swaths of light-colored smoke over the immediate area, according to the aerial footage. At that point, small patches of heavy flames were still visible.
The forward rate of spread was stopped shortly before 5 p.m., and containment was around 10%, according to Cal Fire San Bernardino.
Structures were threatened for a period, but none were damaged, Cal Fire officials said. No injuries were reported.
Crews from multiple agencies responded. At least 30 ground resources and eight air resources were assigned to the firefight.
It’s not yet known what sparked the fire.
