The family of a 24-year-old man shot and killed by deputies and the man who was with him filed a claim for damages against Los Angeles County.
The Los Angeles Times reports the claim filed Wednesday alleges Ryan Twyman and 22-year-old Deimeon Laffell were unarmed when deputies opened fire June 6 as they sat in a car. Sheriff’s officials didn’t immediately comment on the claim.
Surveillance video released by the department shows a deputy opening a rear door of the parked Kia. The car reverses and the open door strikes the deputy. That’s when the deputy and another deputy fire multiple rounds.
Twyman was killed. Laffell was not struck by gunfire.
The Times says deputies were attempting to arrest Twyman because they had previously found weapons in his home.
Officials confirm no guns were recovered at the shooting scene.
