A driver was killed when a big rig hit a pole and burst into flames on the westbound 10 Freeway in Fontana early Monday, authorities said.
The semi-truck, which was said to be carrying chicken, hit some sort of pole shortly after 3 a.m. on the 10 Freeway near Citrus Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol’s incident log.
It blocked several lanes as it became fully engulfed in flames, which spread to a nearby freeway sign, the log said.
The entire westbound freeway was shut down while CHP investigated the fatal crash, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department.
Two left lanes were reopened shortly before 5:30 a.m., but three right lanes and the Citrus offramp remained closed ahead of the morning rush-hour commute.
All lanes reopened by 1 p.m. but the Citrus Avenue offramp was closed for guardrail repairs, Caltrans District 8 said on Twitter.
The driver’s identity has not been released.
