LAPD officers shot a man who also fired on them in the Vermont Square area of South Los Angeles on Monday, according to police.
The exchange of gunfire took place in the 600 block of West 43rd Place, near Figueroa Street (map), about 2:30 p.m., according to Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Eric Rogers, who spoke at the scene.
The LAPD Gang and Narcotics Division officers came upon the man, who was the subject of an investigation they were conducting, when shots were fired, Rogers said.
An LAPD spokeswoman, Officer Liliana Preciado, initially said the man who was shot had first opened fire on detectives as they sat in their car, but Rogers said that could not be confirmed.
It was not clear who fired first, he said.
The injured man was transported to a hospital in unknown condition.
The LAPD’s Office of the Inspector General, which investigates police shootings, was en route to the scene of a “reported categorical use of force” in the department’s Southwest Area, according to a tweet.
The shooting occurred in a residential area on what Rogers described as a “busy street.”
