Deputies were involved in a fatal shooting at a grocery store in Lancaster Tuesday morning, law enforcement officials confirmed.

The shooting occurred at the Albertsons store located in the 43500 block of 20th Street West, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

Deputies encountered an unidentified man at the scene and a shooting occurred.

“The male adult suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead,” the Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release.

Later on Tuesday afternoon, Lancaster city officials took to X, formerly Twitter, to confirm more details surrounding the deputy-involved shooting.

“Today, we faced a grave situation where a suspect armed with two machetes brought significant danger to a public area, leading to a deputy-involved shooting,” Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris said. “My thoughts are with those touched by today’s incident.”

It remains unclear whether the shooting occurred inside or outside the store.

The investigation remains ongoing.
