Skaters have apparently taken to buckled Vasquez Canyon Road, and authorities cautioned Tuesday that the roadway remained closed and was fenced off after being dramatically altered by a landslide.

A 2-mile stretch of the road — in an unincorporated area of north Santa Clarita — was shut down after a slide began pushing up the asphalt on Nov. 19.

The cause of the neighboring hillside’s failure was unknown, and geologists were investigating, officials said last week.

“This isn’t just the road; it’s the mountain itself that’s moving and it’s pushing the road up,” Paul Funk with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works said Friday.

Since the road closed, skateboarders have apparently been attracted to the steeply sloping roadway.

Photos from the area show skaters airborne atop the broken asphalt, and one skater reported many people at the site over the weekend. The unusual sight was an attraction for photographers as well, social media posts appeared to indicate.

On Tuesday, the county Department of Public Works tweeted a photo showing the damaged road fenced off, with “no trespassing” signs posted.

The mountain is “still sliding & is unsafe,” the tweet read. “Stay away!”
