Police are investigating the gruesome discovery of a body inside a stolen U-Haul truck in Los Angeles’ Mid City neighborhood on Thursday.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to the intersection of Apple Street and Redondo Boulevard shortly before 11 a.m. after a resident reported smelling a foul odor coming from the truck.

Officers and a U-Haul employee found the body wrapped in a tarp in the back of the vehicle. Blood was also found inside the truck.

Detectives say the vehicle had been stolen about a week ago and then abandoned on Apple Street just north of the 10 Freeway – an area that residents say is plagued by illegal activity and dumping.

No information about the victim was immediately released. The cause of death will be determined following an autopsy by the coroner’s office.

Officers blocked several streets around the scene for their investigation.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call LAPD at 1-877-275-5273.
