Officials identified a person of interest Monday in their investigation into a hit-and-run that claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy.

Joshua Maldonado was riding on his skateboard near the intersection of Bear and Gage avenues around 11 p.m. on Saturday when he was fatally struck, according to authorities.

The driver fled the scene after the collision.

Officials identified Charles Garcia as a person of interest in the investigation during a news conference Monday.

Garcia was described as a Hispanic man, about 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing about 250 pounds.

“We believe he has information regarding this vehicle and the collision on that evening and he is someone we definitely want to talk to,” Capt. Carlos Islas of the Police Department said.

The vehicle believed to be involved in the collision was a gray Mitsubishi Galant registered to Garcia that likely had front-end damage, police said.

Officials did not release the license plate number of the vehicle because Garcia was only considered as person of interest at the time.

The victim’s brother and father spoke during Monday’s news conference.

Maldonado was described as a creative person by his brother Christian Maldonado, who said Joshua liked to ride his skateboard around the city and take pictures.

Joshua Maldonado’s father asked for anyone with information to come forward and help police.

Investigators also wanted to talk with four other drivers who witnessed the crash but left without helping Maldonado, Bell Police Chief Ed Dashido said.

“We would ask those four individuals that were in those cars to call the Bell Police Department and give a statement,” Dashido said.
