A 15-month-old female gorilla was fatally injured at the San Francisco Zoo when she became trapped under a closing hydraulic door, the zoo said Saturday.

The zoo staff was moving animals from their enclosures to their night quarters Friday when the western lowland gorilla named Kabibe — or “little lady” in Swahili — darted under the closing door, the zoo said in a news release.

The zoo said its primate staff was close to Kabibe, having provided round-the-clock postnatal care for the gorilla during the first six months of her life.

The zoo described the incident as a “tragic accident” and said it will review procedures to determine whether changes are necessary.
