The driver exited a black Nissan Maxima that had come to a stop near Templin Highway shortly after driving over a spike strip.

The chase originated about 9:40 p.m. near the intersection of Rockfield Boulevard and Ridge Route Drive in Lake Forest (map), where the car failed to yield when deputies attempted a traffic stop, according to Lt. Jeff Hallock of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies pursued the driver onto the freeway, and later relinquished the pursuit to the California Highway Patrol in the Santa Ana area.

The high-speed chase moved through mostly light traffic while passing through Buena Park, Downey and East Los Angeles, aerial footage showed.

The driver was temporarily forced to reduce speed in the Burbank area, where motorists had slowed to a crawl near a construction zone.

More than an hour after it began, the pursuit was reaching speeds of about 70 mph in Sun Valley and Sylmar.

The incident came to an end about 11:15 p.m. All northbound lanes were temporarily closed as the CHP cleared the scene on the freeway.
