2-month-old baby found dead in Covina, police investigating

Authorities are investigating the events that led up to the death of a baby in Covina early Sunday morning.

According to the Covina Police Department, officers responded to reports of an infant who was not breathing at an apartment in the 1100 block of North Conwell Street around 6 a.m.

Arriving L.A. County Fire Department paramedics found an unresponsive child at the home. CPR and life-saving measures were performed on the 2-month-old girl, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The child was being watched by a babysitter while their mother was out of state, police said.

It is unknown whether the babysitter is related to the children.

Two other children were at the residence at the time — a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old. They were confirmed to be the deceased infant’s siblings, Covina police said.

The child’s father was notified and has been cooperating with authorities. According to police, a search warrant will be served at the home on Sunday afternoon.

Investigators said the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services had responded to the apartment before involving another undisclosed ongoing investigation.

The exact cause of death has not been revealed, and officers are investigating to find out if the death was natural or because of neglect. No arrests have been made so far. The two siblings were placed under protective custody.

Detectives are working with the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services and the L.A. County Medical Examiner’s Office on the case. An autopsy will determine the child’s official cause of death.
