Seven middle school students aboard an LAUSD bus walked away without injury Friday morning despite a multivehicle crash that left the school bus on top of a parked car in the Harvard Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles.

The bus driver and the driver of another involved vehicle were hospitalized with complaints of pain.

The crash occurred about 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of West 65th Street and South Normandie Avenue.

Emergency crews initially thought they were responding to a fatal collision, Los Angeles Unified School District Police Department Sgt. Joseph Ivankay said.

“Fortunately for everybody, there was no fatal,” Ivankay said.

The school bus was traveling northbound on Normandie in the right-hand lane when an unidentified white, four-door sedan pulled onto Normandie, causing a 1998 Isuzu going the opposite direction to lose control for unknown reason and cross over the double-yellow line, according to a news release from the California Highway Patrol, which is investigating.

The Isuzu SUV crashed into the left front of oncoming school bus. The bus was then pushed into two unoccupied parked cars — a 1984 Chevrolet sedan and a 1993 Toyota. The bus and the Chevy continued moving forward until they both struck a wood utility pole, CHP said.

The Chevy was completely destroyed. The vehicle’s owner, Deon Jones, said he went to look for his car and found it a block down, the bus on top of it. He said he’s thankful he wasn’t in it.

The injured driver of the Isuzu said he had swerved in order to avoid the sedan, which he said cut him off, Ivankay said.

The Isuzu driver, a 39-year-old L.A. man, was taken to California Hospital Medical Center, CHP said. The bus driver, a 51-year-old L.A. resident, was taken to Centinela Hospital Medical Center.

Investigators are still trying to find the driver of the unidentified sedan, which apparently did not stop. Anyone with information is asked to call CHP Officer R. Rodriguez at 213-744-2331.

The crash was caught on surveillance video at a nearby business.

The seven students aboard the bus at the time of the crash were not injured, Ivankay said. They were en route to Mark Twain Middle School.

One girl said she hit her head on the window and then the seat. Her cellphone flew into the aisle, she said.

Four of the students complained of pain, CHP stated, but they were all released to their parents at the scene.
