Two young Apple Valley parents have been arrested after their 8-week-old daughter was found to have a complex skull fracture and to be severely malnourished, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced Friday.
The baby’s injury was the result of blunt force to her head, the Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
Joe Reyes, 26, and Kimberly Aquino, 22, were arrested Friday morning on suspicion of child endangerment.
Aquino had taken their daughter to Desert Valley Hospital in Victorville for injuries to the infant’s head. She was transferred to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital for treatment by forensic pediatricians, who found she was severely malnourished and severely underweight.
The child, who was not identified in a sheriff’s news release, was placed into protective custody by county Children and Family Services social workers.
Detectives from the sheriff’s Crimes Against Children Detail began an investigation.
The parents’ account of how their daughter got hurt was not consistent with the actual injuries, the Sheriff’s Department stated.
Both parents were being held at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto on$100,000 bail. Their arraignment was set for Wednesday in the Victorville courthouse.
Anyone with information was asked to call the detail at 909-387-3615 or, to remain anonymous, 800-782-7463.
