An Amber Alert issued Friday was canceled after a 4-year-old boy and his aunt abducted from Los Angeles were found safe, officials said.
The boy, Reynoldo Gonzalez, and Christina Gonzalez, 35, were kidnapped around 7:30 a.m. Friday near the 1900 block of Gates Street in Lincoln Heights, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
California Highway Patrol had described the pair as “child and mother,” but friends said they were an aunt and nephew. Authorities said family became concerned after not seeing them since morning.
The alert was issued around 5 p.m. Shortly after 7 p.m., CHP announced the Gonzalezes had been “safely located.”
Some “kids” who were outside on their phones in Boyle Heights, on the 2200 block of Barlow Street, received the Amber Alert and spotted the silver Toyota 4Runner the aunt and nephew had been traveling in. Officers in the area responded and found the vehicle and victims nearby, LAPD Officer Drake Madison said in an evening news briefing.
The area is about a 2 mile drive from where the two were reported kidnapped.
It’s unclear who took the pair. Madison said he had no information on a suspect or whether one was in custody, but detectives are “actively investigating.”
“A lot of questions that you’re asking, I don’t have answers to at this time,” Madison told reporters.
Witnesses told KTLA the Gonzalezes were found bound, but police could not confirm that.
Madison described their condition after being found as “safe and sound.”
