A 75-year-old volunteer ranger with the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department was arrested Thursday for allegedly committing lewd acts with a child under the age of 14.

Jerry Dalton was taken into custody in Phelan and booked into the West Valley Detention Center, according to a news release from the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department.

His arrest came after an “extensive investigation” by detectives from the Specialized Investigations Division, Crimes Against Children Detail, the news release stated.

Dalton’s volunteer status with the department was terminated as soon as officials were made aware of his alleged misconduct, according to the release.
