Police on Monday are searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck two people, including a young boy who was killed, in a crash in Gardena over the weekend.
The incident was reported around 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Marine and Budlong avenues.
The pedestrians were trying to cross the street in a crosswalk when they were hit by an unidentified vehicle.
One of the victims was taken to the hospital in unknown condition and the other was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
The fatally struck victim was later identified by officials as 5-year-old Patrick Mateo Chacon.
The second pedestrian was believed to be Chacon’s grandmother, the Daily Breeze reported.
The driver is believed to have fled on Budlong Avenue following the crash.
No information regarding the vehicle or driver has been released.
Video from the scene Monday showed a growing memorial of candles, balloons and a stuffed animal.
The collision occurred just hours after another pedestrian was killed less than two miles away near the intersection of Vermont Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard.
Paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department took the victim to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. The driver remained at the scene.
