After a wild police chase that began in Los Angeles and ended in Long Beach on Friday, an armed carjacker entered a home, stabbed a man in the face, shot two of the man’s sons and then shot himself in the head, authorities said.

The pursuit and the home invasion, which left the three victims and intruder hospitalized, were precipitated by another police chase involving a second stolen vehicle and a driver who remained at large, said Lt. John Jenal, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers attempted to pull over the driver of a stolen Volkswagen Passat near South Vermont Avenue and West 182nd Street, bordering the Gardena and Harbor Gateway neighborhoods, around 9:40 a.m., according to the LAPD.

The driver failed to yield and a pursuit ensued, coming to a pause about 3 miles later near the South Vermont Avenue and West 223rd Street intersection in West Carson, where a male passenger armed with a gun fled on foot, Jenal said.

After the foot bail, the initial driver continued, and at one point drove the wrong way on the 110 Freeway, according to the LAPD. That driver was still being sought Friday afternoon.

The passenger then approached a Dodge Durango, pulled the driver out of the vehicle and shot at the motorist four times, Jenal said, adding that the driver was not struck by gunfire. The carjacker then drove away in the SUV.

“The officers chose to chase the Durango, as opposed to the Passat, because now we knew that that suspect had a gun and had just fired at that victim,” Jenal said.

The carjacker shot at police as he continued to flee, according to the LAPD. He was pursued some 6 miles to Long Beach, where the SUV crashed on Wardlow Road near Maine Avenue, after which he got out and was chased on foot.

The suspect then entered a home in the 3300 block of Daisy Avenue and barricaded himself inside, police said.

A father who had suffered lacerations to his face was able to escape the home and warn police that his two sons were inside. Police did not specify if the man’s sons were adults or minors.

After the officers heard shots being fired inside the residence, they “initiated an immediate-action, rapid-deployment tactic to try and rescue any victims inside,” Jenal said.

“As they made entry, the suspect shot himself in the head, in an attempt to commit suicide,” the lieutenant said.

The barricaded man was extricated from the home around 11:30 a.m. by police and K-9 units.

The two brothers inside sustained gunshot wounds to their legs and bodies, according to the LAPD. A third brother had managed to escape through a bathroom window.

The father and his two wounded sons were transported to a hospital, where they were listed in stable condition, Jenal said.

The intruder was hospitalized in critical condition, police said. He was not immediately identified.
