Three women were in jail Wednesday for allegedly attempting to rob a 14-year-old girl and her father after the pair posted a puppy for sale on Craigslist, according to Fontana police.

The incident occurred Monday in the parking lot of a shopping center near the 15 Freeway and Summit Avenue.

The father-daughter victims advertised a puppy for sale on Craigslist and agreed to drive from Phelan to meet with the three women to sell the animal, a Fontana Police Department news release stated.

When they came face to face in the parking lot, the teen gave Monique Resendez the puppy to hold. Then, Misty Verdugo allegedly pointed a gun at the victims and demanded money.

The teen was pushed into the three women’s vehicle but then pulled out when she protested she was just a minor.

Verdugo and the third woman, Lois Taylor, fled in their vehicle with the puppy and the victims’ property and cash, according to police. Authorities did not specify what property or the amount of cash that was stolen.

Verdugo and Taylor left Resendez at the scene, where she was arrested by responding officers, police said. The other two were later arrested while still in their vehicle along with the puppy and stolen property.

The women’s vehicle was stolen from Victorville, police said.

The victims had the puppy, cash and property returned to them. The three women were booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

Resendez, 35, was released Tuesday afternoon, according to San Bernardino County inmate records. She was held on suspicion of robbery and criminal conspiracy.

Taylor, 51, was due in court on Wednesday. She was being held on $100,000 bail on suspicion of robbery, criminal conspiracy and vehicle theft, inmate records showed.

Verdugo, 39, was likewise being held on $100,000 bail and was due in court Wednesday. She was held on suspicion of the same three charges as Taylor plus receiving stolen property.
