Three Sonoma State University students have been arrested on suspicion of burglarizing at least two dozen dorm rooms while the campus was evacuated during a huge wildfire.

Authorities said Daryl Reems, Jose Rubio and Lamont Paxton were stopped on Oct. 29 while driving away from the campus, which was shuttered when the Kincade Fire chased tens of thousands of people from their homes.

University spokesman Paull Gullixson said the 18-year-old men were stopped because no one was allowed near the dorms without permission. An officer found what he believed to be stolen property in their car and arrested them.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that as students returned to the dorms later that week, campus police received at least 24 burglary reports.
