Firefighters were working to contain a blaze that grew to 300 acres in Camp Pendleton Wednesday evening, officials said.

Gates were closed on Cristianitos Road at the Marine Corps Base, where the fire broke out near San Mateo Campground around 6:20 p.m., according to an alert posted to the camp’s Twitter account.

Although Orange County fire officials had earlier reported the blaze at 400 acres in size, they later revised that number.

By 10 p.m., forward progression had been stopped on the fires’ east, west and south ends, with crews working on the northern portion.

The fire had remained on the base, where no structures were threatened, said Camp Pendleton Fire Capt. Brian Villiard. Aerial support crews also poured fire retardant to protect the homes located north of Christianos Road, Marine Corps officials said.

Smoke from the brush fire was rolling across Orange County due to winds blowing from the south and southwest, according to the National Weather Service.

At one point the flames reached the area just east of Calle Extremo, the base’s western border with San Clemente, firefighters said.

Crews planned to work overnight with the Forest Service providing its night-flying helicopter, firefighters said.

About 350 firefighters from the Camp Pendleton Fire Department, Orange County Fire Authority and U.S. Forest Service were battling the blaze, which was first reported at about 15 acres in size.
