Two teens were pulled into the surf and swept out to sea this weekend at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach, and after an hours-long search, authorities said the boys were presumed drowned.

The boys, both 17 and from Vallejo, had waded into the surf with three other friends about 4:20 p.m. Saturday when they were dragged into the sea by strong currents, San Francisco Fire Department spokesman Jonathan Baxter told the San Francisco Chronicle.

The boys’ friends made it to shore and were later hospitalized in stable condition.

Rescue crews from the U.S. Coast Guard and the Fire Department searched for the missing boys for more than four hours. Coast Guard Lt. Marcia Medina told KPIX-TV that two lifeboats and a helicopter were deployed to find the boys, who were only identified by the color shorts they wore: one had blue shorts, and the other wore gray.
