The day after two teenagers died in a crash in the Lancaster area, the California Highway Patrol stated Tuesday that the boys had driven through a stop sign and directly into the path of a big rig.

Both teens were in a Toyota Prius driving northbound on 60th Street West Monday night at an unknown speed when the car drove through a stop sign at the street’s intersection with Highway 138, CHP stated in a news release.

The Prius drove directly into the path of a Volvo tractor trailer traveling westbound on Highway 138 at about 55 mph.

Although the big rig attempted to stop it collided into the right side of the Prius. The impact forced both vehicles to travel northwest before coming to a stop in a desert area.

The teens were trapped and extricated by L.A. County Fire Department personnel.

The passenger died at the scene and the driver of the Prius was later pronounced dead at the Antelope Valley Hospital.

Both teens were 16 and were respectively from Palmdale and Piedmont, Okla.

Rodolfo Marcello, 55, was driving the truck and sustained no injuries from the crash.

The collision occurred in an unincorporated area of the Antelope Valley.
