Two people died and a suspect was in custody following a shooting at an Alhambra apartment complex late Friday, authorities said.

Reports of gunfire just before 7:15 p.m. first drew police to the 400 block of North Second Avenue, between Grand Avenue and Alhambra Road, according to the Alhambra Police Department.

Officers encountered two gunshot victims “down” inside an apartment, police said in a written statement. The officers attempted CPR, but both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

“As an additional officer was responding to the location, a male subject stopped the officer in the area of Main Street and Second Street and told the officer that he had just shot two subjects inside of a residence in the 400 block of North Second Street,” the statement said.

The man was detained and ultimately arrested in connection with the shooting, police said.

“The motive of the shooting is still being investigated and we are still trying to determine the relationship between the suspect and the victims,” according to the police statement.

No additional suspects were being sought.

The alleged gunman’s bail was expected to be set at $2 million, police said. His identity was not released, nor was a description of the victims.

Witnesses told KTLA they heard what sounded like numerous gunshots prior to police swarming the neighborhood.
