The Albertsons supermarket chain announced on Friday that hackers recently attempted to obtain the credit and debit card information of customers at 180 stores in Southern California and several other states.
The data breach was believed to have started on June 22 and ended on July 17 of this year, a news release on the company’s website stated.
Albertsons stores in Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming and Utah were also believed to have been affected by the breach.
It was not immediately clear how many customers may have been impacted, but the release stated the supermarket chain had no evidence that any cardholder information was stolen or misused.
The breach was believed to have been contained and Albertsons was “confident” that customers could use their cards safely again at its stores, according to the release.
Although Albertsons said it was unlikely anyone was at risk of identity theft from the breach, customers who may have been affected were asked to call the Customer Center at 1-877-932-7948 for information on enrolling in a year’s worth of complimentary identity protection services.
