Police shot and wounded a man who pulled out a gun while crossing the street in South Whittier Tuesday, officials said.
Officers were in the area of Beaty and Laurel avenues for an unrelated case when they confronted the man around 5 p.m., said Sgt. Frank Preciado with the Los Angeles Police Department.
Law enforcement sources said the LAPD officers were there conducting surveillance. South Whittier is an unincorporated area patrolled by the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.
The officers were in a parked vehicle when they spotted two men crossing the street, and one of them produced a firearm, according to Preciado.
At least one of the officers opened fire and struck the armed man. Preciado said it’s still unclear how many rounds were fired.
The man was hospitalized in unknown condition, officials said.
His companion tried to run but was apprehended a short time later. He remained at the scene Tuesday night, Preciado said.
No officers were injured.
Sheriff’s officials were also at the scene assisting in the investigation, which was expected to continue overnight, Preciado said.
