A woman was shot dead and a man injured Christmas Day in Bellflower in what authorities described as an attempted murder-suicide involving a divorced couple.

Authorities were called to the 9100 block of Rosecrans Avenue about 3:15 p.m. Monday, when they found a Hispanic woman with at least one gunshot wound to her upper torso, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second victim, a Hispanic man, was hospitalized after being shot, also in the upper torso, with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. His condition was not known, the department stated.

“Detectives believe the suspect contacted the victim at the location and during the contact, he produced a firearm and shot her. He then turned the firearm on himself,” the Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release.

Authorities described the two as a divorced couple with a 6-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter. The children were present at the time of the shooting but were not injured, according to deputies.

The suspected shooter was not arrested “pending further investigation of the incident,” the release stated.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at 323-890-5500. Tipsters wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
