Cleanup efforts were under way in Camarillo Springs on Saturday, one day after a massive storm sent a torrent of water, rocks, mud and debris into homes.
At least 10 homes sustained “significant” damage when the powerful storm triggered a mudslide above San Como Lane around 2 a.m. Friday, authorities said.
The neighborhood, located in the Spring Fire burn area, was under a voluntary evacuation order at the time. After the mudslide, authorities changed the evacuations from voluntary to mandatory.
Firefighters were at the scene Saturday surveying the area to make sure all hazards were appropriately identified, according to Pete Jensen with the Ventura County Fire Department. Jensen added that once that was done, they would turn cleanup efforts over to the homeowners’ association and the residents.
“This is an elderly community, so the ability for them to be rebuild or do the work themselves anyways, is a lot more difficult,” Jensen said. “That’s not to say they couldn’t rebuild, but it’s hard to see what’s going to happen in the future.”
