All surfers worry about the possibility of getting attacked by a shark. But an otter encounter? Not on the radar.

One surfer in Santa Cruz recently learned that while sea otters may not particularly dangerous to humans, they can cause trouble in other ways.

On Sept. 14, Chad Underhill-Meras captured footage of an otter swiping his friend’s surfboard and refusing to get off.

The friend spends several minutes splashing the otter and trying to persuade him to give up the surfboard, to no avail.

Eventually, with the help of another surfer, the guy finally gets his board back.

No one, including the otter, was hurt.
