A teenage snowboarder was hospitalized after falling from a chairlift at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in an incident that was captured on video over the weekend.

It happened on Saturday, Jan. 27 as the 16-year-old girl had just loaded onto the Stump Alley Express chair with three other riders, according to the resort.

“As the chair began its ascent, the guest, who for unknown reasons was not completely seated, began sliding off the chair,” a spokesperson told KTLA 5 News. “The other individuals on the chair grabbed hold of the guest and held her from falling as Lift Operators stopped the lift.”

Video recorded from several angles shows the girl hanging from the lift as a group of resort employees and guests extend a deceleration net -which is intended to slow but not stop a fall- on the slope below her.

She eventually plunges into the net and slams into the packed powder, the video shows.

The teen was transported to Mammoth Hospital “for evaluation,” the resort spokesperson said.

Her identity and condition were not known. KTLA 5 reached out to the hospital but did not receive a response.

“Our thoughts are with the guest and her family,” the resort said.

With a base elevation of nearly 8,000 feet, Mammoth Mountain is California’s highest ski resort and averages 400 inches of snowfall per season.
