Deputies shot and wounded a man after he shot another person and then fired at a law enforcement helicopter in Southern California, authorities said.

Kern County deputies arriving at the scene in Bakersfield on Wednesday found a person suffering from a major gunshot wound, KBAK-TV reported.

They also encountered a man with a rifle, who ran into a residential neighborhood. Deputies shot the gunman after he opened fire on a sheriff’s helicopter overhead and then tried to break into a home, officials said.

The suspect, who was not identified, was hospitalized in critical condition, the news station reported.

The condition of the original gunshot victim wasn’t immediately known.

No deputies or residents were hurt.
