Two of the leading Democratic candidates in the California US Senate race made stops in the Bay Area over the past week. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) both appeared at the Villages Golf and Country Club in South San Jose for events hosted by its Democratic Club.

“This November, our Democracy is on the ballot. And so is the future of Social Security and Medicare,” Schiff posted on social media on Monday.

While addressing the club, Schiff spoke about what he called the autocracy of former President Donald Trump, the lack of resources such as clean water in the Central Valley, and California’s high cost of living, according to the San Jose Spotlight.

Schiff is currently leading the race, based on a recent Emerson College Polling/California Politics poll, with 25% of voters surveyed supporting him.

Bay Area Rep. Lee visited the Villages Golf and Country Club several days earlier than Schiff. According to the San Jose Spotlight, she addressed issues that included reproductive rights, lowering the national defense budget and her experience as a Black woman in politics with the group.

Recent polling shows Lee as currently in fourth, having seen her support drop from 9% to 8% since November. Over the past week, she picked up two more endorsements from progressive political organizations with both the San Francisco Latinx Democratic Club and the Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club throwing their support behind her.

Schiff and Lee will join fellow Democratic Rep. Katie Porter and leading Republican candidate Steve Garvey for a debate hosted by KRON4 News on February 12, at 7 p.m. You can catch the debate on KRON4 TV and streaming live on kron4.com.
