Chilling video shows the panic that ensued after a 10-year-old Maryland boy was bitten by a shark while swimming inside a tank full of sharks at a Bahamas resort on Monday.
The attack happened at the sprawling Atlantis Paradise Island water park, where the boy was participating in “an expedition” inside a large tank inhabited by reef and nurse sharks that surrounds the resort’s iconic Mayan Temple waterslide.
In the video, recorded by another family and obtained by TMZ, people are heard shrieking from one end of the tank near the entry point. The camera pans over to show the boy being helped out of the water and tended to by staff.
The boy suffered a bite wound to his right leg, officials said. He was transported to a hospital in stable condition and later airlifted back to the United States.
Blue Adventures by Stuart Cove, the company that runs the shark diving program at Atlantis, said the attraction would be closed until further notice.
“Incidents like this involving interactions with marine life, even with the species of sharks included in this experience are rare and never accepted,” the company said in a statement to NBC.
In a statement to CNN, the U.S. State Department said it was “aware” of the incident.
“We are greatly concerned when any US citizen (is) harmed overseas, and we stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance,” the State Department spokesperson said. “Due to privacy considerations, we have no further comment.”
