At the Petersen Automotive Museum, “The Negro Motorist Green Book” is an exhibition developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) (https://negromotoristgreenbook.si.edu/) in collaboration with award-winning author, photographer, and cultural documentarian, Candacy Taylor.
This special exhibition offers an immersive look at the reality of travel for African Americans in mid-century America and how the annual guide served as an indispensable resource for the nation’s rising African American middle class and evidence of a vibrant business class.
The Green Book became “the bible of black travel during Jim Crow”, enabling black travelers to find lodgings, businesses, and gas stations that would serve them along the road. Jim Crow laws were a collection of state and local statutes that legalized racial segregation. Named after a Black minstrel show character, the laws—which existed for about 100 years, from the post-Civil War era until 1968—were meant to marginalize African Americans by denying them the right to vote, hold jobs, get an education or other opportunities. Those who attempted to defy Jim Crow laws often faced arrest, fines, jail sentences, violence and death.
This special exhibition also contains interactive video component providing a realistic experience of the dangers of driving while black.

The award-winning documentary “ GAINING GROUND: THE FIGHT FOR BLACK LAND” , which has been screening across the country including the Los Angeles Pan African Film and Arts Festival for Black History Month. The feature film tells the complex issues and experience of the African Americans impacted by land loss.
