Our parents tell us not to play with our food, but we can make an exception for CANSTRUCTION LA. You can describe this as a “foodraiser” for the Los Angeles Food Bank. Architects, designers, builders, and engineers donate their time and talent to create large scale structures made entirely of canned foods. All money  raised, as well as all cans used for the structures, are donated to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Last year, CANSTRUCTION LA contributed 27,249 pounds of food and $15,799.00

4th Annual Otis Kite Festival

Otis College of Art and Design brings world-renowned kite artists to Santa Monica for a day of family fun, education, and art at its fourth Annual Kite Festival adjacent to the Santa Monica Pier from 10am to 4pm. The event is free and open to the public. Parking is $12 for all day access. Headlining a day of flying kites and other inflatables will be world-renowned kite artists Tyrus Wong, George Peters, Melanie Walker, Jose Sainz, Ali Fujino, and Ron Gibian.

A special workshop for kids focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) will integrate California Common Core requirements in Science with instruction in Art and Design. Kids will learn about the physics of flight, climate and wind, sustainable materials, and color theory while designing and decorating their own unique kites.

The Kite Festival was developed by Otis College of Art and Design’s Creative Action Program to bring families and communities throughout the Los Angeles region together for a fun-filled day of learning, creating art, and kite flying. This year, with generous support from the Drachen Foundation, Art4Moore, the Tides Foundation, the Home Depot, and the California State Coastal Conservancy, Otis has secured the funds and supplies to deliver a fantastic community event that will include educational workshops, painting, kite design and flying, and a special plain air drawing workshop.
