Gene Kang

Gene Kang is a general assignment reporter for KTLA 5 News.

Gene, an Emmy Award-winning TV reporter, considers it a dream come true to work at KTLA. He has close family members in Southern California and previously worked as a reporter for KNBC.

In September 2020, he worked as a west coast network correspondent for France 24 International News, which is based in Los Angeles and broadcasts to a global audience of 800+ million homes. 

Gene has 20 years of experience as a broadcast journalist, on and off camera. He has worked as a reporter, anchor and producer in newsrooms across the country, including Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Texas, Indiana and Kentucky. He’s won numerous awards, including an AP Award for best reporter, LA Press Club Awards, Emmy Awards and Edward R. Murrow Award for breaking news team coverage.

Over the years, he’s interviewed many dignitaries and world figures, such as President Barack Obama, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the 14th Dalai Lama. He began his news career behind the scenes as one of the youngest assignment editors at WMAQ.

Gene currently serves as an advisory board member for the LA chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association. He was the senior vice president of programming for several years. Gene is a volunteer leader with the SGI-USA and helps support the peace and happiness of many members in Southern California. He’s a spiritual and health enthusiast, hiker, amateur nature photographer, artist and dancer. An avid animal lover, his father is a veterinarian and his mother is a retired ICU nurse. Gene was born in Chicago and was raised there and Los Angeles.

He’s part of the LGBTQ+ community and has been happily married since 2014 to his husband and best friend, Dan Nevez. In 2022, they celebrated 25 years together.
