An officer shot and killed a man at a Culver City gas station while responding to reports of an armed man Saturday afternoon, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Witnesses reported a man with a gun in the area of Sepulveda and Venice boulevards at about 12:40 p.m. and the officer-involved shooting took place shortly after, according to LAPD Officer Drake Madison. Police initially described the shooting scene as in being part of Los Angeles’s Palms neighborhood, but said it was ultimately determined to be within Culver City’s jurisdiction.

“An LAPD Supervisor responded and made contact with suspect at which point an Officer Involved Shooting occurred,” LAPD said in a tweet.

The suspect was struck at least once and was taken to a hospital, where he ultimately died, according to the department.

Police said they have not confirmed reports that the man had a gun and they will be reviewing body camera footage and interviewing witnesses to determine whether a weapon was ever involved.

“We’re gonna speak to a lot of witnesses here to see what type of weapon that person had, or what did he have in his hand, that resulted in this officer-involved shooting,” LAPD Sgt. Frank Preciado told KTLA.

No officers were injured during the incident.

Video from the scene showed multiple police cruisers and officers investigating at a Shell gas station that was cordoned off with police tape.

It’s unclear what prompted the officer to open fire and no further details were immediately available.

The man killed in the shooting was not identified, but nearby residents told KTLA he was homeless had been living in a tent at a nearby homeless encampment.

KTLA’s Alyssa Kelly contributed to this report.
