The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says a mother bear that scratched a man in Sierra Madre is being returned to the wild along with her cub.
Biologists determined that the black bear involved in the June 10 incident was protecting her cub and was not abnormally aggressive.
The bear and cub wandered into a backyard and got into a confrontation with the man’s dog. The department says the man jumped in to save his dog and was scratched when he kicked the bear.
A wildlife officer tranquilized both bears and DNA samples show the adult was not the same bear involved in an April 25 incident in Sierra Madre.
The department says the bears were to be released in a suitable habitat.
