Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man during an encounter in Inglewood late Thursday, authorities said.

It was the third fatality in a shooting involving a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy that night.

The incident took place about 10:30 p.m. in the 3700 block of Imperial Highway, near Doty Avenue, Deputy Erin Liu of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Information Bureau said in a written statement.

Deputies made contact with a man in that area and a shooting occurred, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release Friday morning.

The man was struck multiple times in the upper body and transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, the Sheriff’s Department stated.

Audio recorded from a police scanner described some of the events.

“Okay … Everybody be advised, suspect is down. Suspect is inside the patrol vehicle,” someone can be heard saying. “We have, uh, numerous deputies that are holding the suspect at gunpoint. He’s going to be seated in the front seat of the patrol vehicle. There’s going to be 417 in his waistband.”

Authorities have not confirmed the information in the audio recording.

A witness told KTLA both sides opened fire during the incident.

“I saw a gun battle … I heard it, everything,” Luis Nhaera said.

Kala Jordon, who told KTLA she was the victim’s mother, does not believe her son was to blame.

She said her son was staying at a nearby hotel and only left to get a pizza when the events unfolded.

“I just want you to know that. That my son is innocent. He was murdered tonight,” Jordon said.

She identified her son as 27-year-old Edtwon Stamps.

Investigators have not revealed what prompted authorities to contact the victim or why they opened fire. The Sheriff’s Department did say they found a handgun at the scene.

No deputies were injured in the incident.

On Thursday evening, deputies also shot and killed a man in Willowbrook and another man died in a deputy-involved shooting following an hourslong standoff in San Gabriel. The standoff suspect had allegedly shot at authorities multiple times.
