A 17-year-old boy died after jumping from the seventh floor of a parking structure and landing on another man at the Americana at Brand mall in Glendale Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The teen was taken to the Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center in Boyle Heights after officials responded to the scene around 2:40 p.m., said Tahnee Lightfoot, a public information officer for Glendale police.

Police had earlier described the person who jumped as a man in his 20s. Lightfoot said the boy was identified as a Los Angeles resident, but police were declining to release his name.

The teen was taken to the hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries just before 5:30 p.m., Lightfoot said.

The male pedestrian he landed on was also hospitalized. The extent of the man’s injuries was unclear, but Lightfoot said he was expected to survive.

The pedestrian, a man in his 40s, was with his two children at the time, according to Lightfoot. Neither child was hurt.

The incident was being investigated as a suicide.

Rick Caruso, the founder and CEO of the development firm that runs the mall, issued a statement saying he was “heartbroken” and that “everyone at Caruso is thinking about and praying for these individuals and their families.”

“We are working with local law enforcement and will provide additional information, as appropriate,” Caruso wrote.

Central Avenue was closed for a time between Broadway and Colorado Street, but reopened around 3:30 p.m.
