A parole board has determined that a former actor who was convicted in 2010 of attempted murder for repeatedly stabbing his girlfriend at her San Marcos home will be released from prison.

Shelley Malil, 45, who is probably best known for a small role in the movie “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” appeared before a panel of parole commissioners at a hearing at Chuckawalla Valley State Prison in Riverside County.

The panel had convened to revisit a previous ruling this year that Malil should be paroled in part because of assessments that deemed him at a low risk of committing violence in the future.

Gov. Jerry Brown had pushed back against that earlier decision, arguing in a letter that there remained a lack of explanation as to why Malil’s “rage escalated so far out of control, and resulted in such a prolonged horror.”
