Shots fired by a security guard working to stop an attempted robbery at the Glendale Galleria afternoon sent mall patrons running for cover.

No one was hurt in the incident, which unfolded shortly before 2:45 p.m. at Bhindi Jewelers when three men went into the luxury store and began smashing display cases with small sledgehammers in an attempt to grab the merchandise, said Sgt. Dan Suttles with the Glendale Police Department.

An armed security guard who works in the store fired up to three rounds while attempting to impede the would-be robbers, Suttles said.

The security officer was able to hold one of the men until Glendale police — who have a substation within the mall — were able to respond, but the other two suspects are still outstanding, according to the sergeant. No suspect descriptions were immediately available, but investigators were working to obtain security footage from the mall to identify the men.

One suspect could be seen being taken from the mall in handcuffs in video shared on Twitter.

“This was never an active shooter,” Suttles said. “This was always just a call of a robbery.”

But shoppers at the mall that afternoon feared the mall would become the site of America’s latest mass shooting. People reported on social media that stores including Nordstrom and Zara had been placed on lockdown, and many were fleeing the shopping area on foot fearing for their lives.

“Before you knew it, basically people were trampling over each other like a fight broke out right there between Nordstrom and the Asian restaurant,” a man named Edward, who was working for skincare brand Kate Somerville within Nordstrom, told KTLA. “We went across the street, we were hiding out at the bridal shop. Everybody was locked in there.”

Many stores in the area near Bhindi Jewelers remained closed Saturday night, those others had reopened.

No further details were immediately available.
