Six people were critically injured in a crash along the 5 Freeway north of Pyramid Lake Wednesday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash involving two vehicles about 1:30 p.m. on the southbound side of the freeway south of Smokey Bear Road.
A Toyota Prius appeared to be totaled and a blue SUV was on its side after the crash, aerial video from Sky5 showed.
Several people, including children, were trapped in one of the vehicles, CHP stated on its traffic incident log.
At least two Fire Department helicopters responded and airlifted the victims.
Traffic was backed up for miles on both sides, according to the CHP.
The northbound side of the freeway reopened by about 3:15 p.m., CHP stated. Southbound lanes were reopened by 5:15 p.m.
