Days after a suspected drunk driver collided with a pregnant motorist in Escondido, in a hit-and-run crash that left her unborn child dead, the woman remained hospitalized Wednesday, according to a report.
Lucrecia Vasquez, 27, was seriously injured in the incident, which occurred early Sunday morning in northern San Diego County, police said in a statement. She was six months pregnant at the time.
Officers responded shortly after 2 a.m. to the area of Broadway and Highway 78, where they discovered that the second driver, 33-year-old Jose Uriostegui, had attempted to flee the scene on foot, the Escondido Police Department said. The man was detained by two people who were not involved in the crash.
According to witnesses’ statements and evidence gathered at the scene, Uriostegui was driving eastbound on Highway 78 in a black 2005 Ford F-150 pickup truck when he collided with Vasquez, who was heading northbound on Broadway in a gray 2013 Nissan Altima.
The expectant woman was rushed to Palomar Memorial Hospital in nearby Poway, the news release said. Her passenger, a 24-year-old woman, was treated for moderate injuries that were not life-threatening.
Uriostegui, who suffered minor wounds, was arrested and booked on suspicion of DUI, felony hit-and-run and driving without a license, police said.
Vasquez’s unborn son, whom she had intended to name Santiago, died in the womb, KFMB reported.
A GoFundMe page has been created to help pay for Vasquez’s medical care.
“Lucy and her husband, Jose, have three other children at home praying for their mother’s recovery,” according to a statement on the fundraising website. “It is unimaginable to lose a child at any stage of life, however this poor family has been forced to face that reality.
“You’re with God now, Baby Santiago. RIP,” the post said.
