Kevin Patrick Kirkland of Rancho Cucamonga was taken into custody Tuesday evening in Gilbert, Arizona, according to a Redlands Police Department news release.

A math teacher, Kirkland had been placed on administrative leave in April after Redlands Unified School District administrators accused him of inappropriate conduct toward another student, police said. A police investigation determined the conduct in question was “not criminal,” the release stated.

Then, administrators reported possible inappropriate behavior toward another student.

An “extensive investigation” this time revealed the teacher had engaged in multiple sexual encounters with the student, police said.

The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office filed five counts of oral copulation of a minor and one count of distributing harmful matter to a minor against Kirkland, police said.

Redlands detectives brought Kirkland back to Southern California, and he was booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on Thursday on $2 million bail.
