A 19-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle crash when his car struck a block wall and a telephone pole early Saturday morning in Garden Grove, police said.

Officers responded to numerous reports of a crash on the south curb line of Chapman Avenue near Jennifer Lane around 1:40 a.m. and found the lone occupant pinned in the driver seat, according to a news release from the Garden Grove Police Department.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Orange County coroner’s office later identified him as Austen Christian, a 19-year-old resident of Garden Grove.

It was not immediately known whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, the release stated. The coroner’s office was working to determine if the driver was under the influence at the time of the fatal incident.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Witnesses have been asked to call the Police Department’s Traffic Accident Investigation Unit at 714-741-5704.
