A horse that was found dead with its tail tied to a telephone pole on a street near Sylmar over the weekend had been brutally beaten and shot, the Los Angeles Police Department said Monday.

The disturbing discovery was reported about 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the 11700 block of Kagel Canyon Road, at the end of a cul-de-sac in the Kagel Canyon Community, according to LAPD Officer Mike Lopez.

There were initially conflicting reports about the horse’s injuries, but LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman confirmed Monday morning the horse had been beaten and shot.

She did not provide information on how many gunshot wounds the horse sustained, or where the animal had been shot.

A cause of death has not yet been determined.

As of Monday morning, police had no one in custody in connection with the incident. LAPD Detective Eric Bixler indicated Saturday that police had “information that will eventually lead to an arrest.”

The case is being investigated by LAPD’s Animal Cruelty Task Force.

Anyone with information is urged to call LAPD Detective Reyes at 213-486-0450.
